Pregnancy Problems
Problems during the pregnancy were assessed, such as eclampsia, iron deficiency, or twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS).
In NTR projects YC_DSC and YC_ADHMRI, information about pregnancy problems was assessed via mother-ratings obtained via a telephone interview.

Purpose | The research carried out by the Netherlands Twin Register focuses on the role of heritability in mental and physical health. For instance, the NTR investigates why some people become more easily depressed than others, or why certain people get diabetes while others do not. Other research areas include lifestyle and habits that influence health and disease, such as smoking, drinking and exercise. |

Short description of the wave | After registration of newborn twins, which is before the age of 12 months for 89% of the twins (mean age = 0.8 years, SD = 1.17 years), the mother of a twin pair receives the first survey which focuses on conception (spontaneous or otherwise), information from parents themselves (demographics, height, weight), pregnancy (e.g. duration, smoking and drinking behaviors of both parents during pregnancy), birth and health (malformations) of the children shortly after birth. The mother is asked to fill in this survey, and this was done by the biological mother for almost all of surveys with others (stepmother, adoptive mother, some fathers) completing this survey in a small number of families (<0.05%). |

Short description of the wave | The purpose of the YC_DSC project was to investigate the relation between Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) diagnosis of ADHD and Child Behavioral Checklist Attention Problems (CBCL-AP) scores. Twins were selected based on their maternal CBCL-AP scores at ages 7, 10 and 12 (mean age = 11.7 years, SD = 0.78 years). Twin pairs were selected if at least one of the twins scored high on AP (affected pairs), or if both twins scored low on AP (control pairs). In families that agreed to participate, the mother of the twins was interviewed by telephone with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC-IV). Other surveys that were collected are the CBCL, SWAN and YSR. Mouth swabs were used to collect buccal cell samples, from which DNA was extracted. |

Short description of the wave | In the ADHD-MRI project, the genetic and environmental influence on ADHD related neurobiological changes were investigated in monozygotic twins (mean age = 14.9 years, SD = 1.2 years) who were born between 1986 and 1993. Twins were selected based on their Child Behavior Checklist Attention Problems (CBCL-AP) scores obtained in the regular YNTR survey waves and divided into three groups: discordant pairs (one affected, one unaffected), concordant pairs (both affected) and control pairs (both unaffected). To determine the presence of ADHD, mothers of the participants were interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC-IV). Additionally, they filled in two behavioral questionnaires (CBCL and Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behavior (SWAN)). The twins filled in the Youth Self Report (YSR). Based on the outcome of the interview and questionnaires, twin pairs that were found eligible for the MRI experiments were invited. Both structural and functional MRI (color-stroop and flanker tasks) were performed. DNA was collected to confirm zygosity. |

Short description of the wave | In 2008, a combination of the triplet surveys at age 1 and 2 was sent to mothers of all triplets in both YNTR and ANTR. The survey was sent to 535 mothers and was returned by 264 mothers (triplet ages ranged between 2 and 38 years, mean age = 11.9, SD = 7.0). Since 2009, the combined survey 1 and 2 serves as the first survey for newly registered triplets at age 2. The combined survey comprises items on pregnancy, gestational age, smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy, mode of delivery, breastfeeding, attaining milestones, and growth. |

The NTR was established in 1987 and has enrolled around 120.000 twins and a roughly equal number of their relatives. The majority of twin families have participated one or more times in survey studies on a host of epidemiological variables including social demography, personality, lifestyle, somatic and mental health, and subsamples took part in biomaterial collection (e.g. DNA) and dedicated projects for e.g. neuropsychological, biomarker, and behavioral traits. The recruitment into the NTR is fully inclusive without any restrictions on enrolment. The NTR is committed to actively seek the commitment of its participants to science and their continued involvement in NTR research by maintaining a website, electronic newsletters, and the MijnNTR portal that provides personalized feedback to participants. The NTR resources, e.g. the longitudinal phenotyping, the extended pedigree structures, and the multi-generation genotyping allow for future twin-family research that will contribute to gene discovery, causality modelling, and studies of genetic and cultural inheritance of behavioral traits and mental and physical health.
