Steroid hormones - Cortisol

Steroid hormones, for instance Testosterone, Estrogen, Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and Cortisol, measured with traditional enzymatic tests, such as Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA).

In TRAILS, cortisol was assessed, a steroid hormone that is released with a diurnal cycle. The release of cortisol is increased in response to stress and low blood sugar levels. Cortisol was assessed from a saliva sample using Salivette Sampling Device and Dissociation-Enhanced Lanthanide Fluorescent Immuno Assay (DELFIA). Cortisol levels were assessed after waking up, half an hour later, at 20:00h, and before, during, and after the Trier Social Stress Test. The first measurement wave did not include cortisol during the Trier Social Stress Test, and the third measurement wave did not include cortisol at 20:00h.
