Skinfold thickness, waist and hip circumference

Skinfold thickness, waist and hip circumference were assessed as an indication of body fat. Skinfold thickness can noninvasively and reliably be measured at various sites of the body using a skinfold caliper. Based on measurements at multiple sites of the body, the total body fat and contribution of fat to the body mass can be estimated.

In Generation R, subcutaneous fat mass was measured as skinfold thickness on the left side of the body at four different sites (biceps, triceps, suprailiacal and subscapular) according to standard procedures. Waist and hip circumferences were also measured. Subcutaneous fat mass was only measured in a subgroup.
