Universe | Adolescents, young adults, and adults from the general population (Population cohort) as well as with a high-risk profile (Clinical cohort), and their offspring (The Next Generation), selected from urban and rural areas in the North of the Netherlands at the time of the baseline assessment. The largest ethnic group is the Dutch (89.7%). |
Measure was collected within the following cohort(s):

Description | The TRAILS Population Cohort (TRAILS: POP) started in 2000 (N = 2230 at wave 1) and follows adolescents and young adults from the general population from the age of 11 onwards to study their psychological, social, and physical development. Participants, but also their parents, teachers, peers, and partners, are assessed every 2 to 3 years, through questionnaires, interviews, tests, and physical measurements. Participants were included if they lived in one of the five selected municipalities in Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe (the Netherlands), were born between October 1989 and September 1991, and attended a primary school that agreed to participate at the time. |
Purpose | During adolescence and young adulthood, people go through profound changes, both physically and psychologically. These changes affect the way they interact with others, and how they process and cope with their experiences. The choices made and directions taken in these phases of life can have a major impact on future well-being, behavior and health, and even affect the next generation. More knowledge of the causes of a favorable or unfavorable development can help to prevent problems or treat them at an early stage. Not only problematic developmental trajectories are of interest, but successful ones as well. |
