Short description of the wave | After registration of newborn twins, which is before the age of 12 months for 89% of the twins (mean age = 0.8 years, SD = 1.17 years), the mother of a twin pair receives the first survey which focuses on conception (spontaneous or otherwise), information from parents themselves (demographics, height, weight), pregnancy (e.g. duration, smoking and drinking behaviors of both parents during pregnancy), birth and health (malformations) of the children shortly after birth. The mother is asked to fill in this survey, and this was done by the biological mother for almost all of surveys with others (stepmother, adoptive mother, some fathers) completing this survey in a small number of families (<0.05%). |

Short description of the wave | The YS_5 survey is sent to the mothers around the 5th birth year of the twins (mean age = 5.52 years, SD = 0.55 years). The survey includes items on child care and school, growth, zygosity, toilet training, asthma and eczema, fine motor coordination, language development, and problem behaviors as assessed by a short version of the Devereux Child Behavior Checklist (DCB). The booklet includes an extra section for fathers of twins to report about behavior problems. From 2011 onward, items on child care and school, living and family situation were updated and items on wellbeing were added. From the second half of 2015 the short form of the Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ) was added. From 2017 the surveys no longer have a separate section for the father. |

From 2019, the questionnaire returned to its original length with CBCL and Conners items, and from 2020 the items on leisure time and on family and living situation were removed. |

Short description of the wave | The YC_BS2 project was the second measurement in the Dutch longitudinal Brain Scale study in which twins, their siblings and their parents were assessed at three year intervals. YC_BS2 took place three years after the baseline (YC_BS1) and targeted 12-year old twins (mean age = 12.2 years, SD = 0.3 years) born between 1995 and 1996 and their 9-18 year old siblings (mean age = 14.8 years, SD = 1.3 years) born between 1990 and 1997. The main aim of the Brain Scale project was to explore to what extent genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in brain development and cognition. Data collection included psychometric IQ tests, a comprehensive neuropsychological testing protocol, and parental and self-ratings of behavioral and emotional problems. Physical maturation was measured through assessment of Tanner stages. Hormonal levels (cortisol, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and estrogens) were assessed in urine and saliva. Brain scans were acquired using 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which provided volumetric measures and measures of cortical thickness. Buccal swabs were collected for DNA isolation for future candidate gene and genome-wide analysis studies. |

Short description of the wave | In 2008, a combination of the triplet surveys at age 1 and 2 was sent to mothers of all triplets in both YNTR and ANTR. The survey was sent to 535 mothers and was returned by 264 mothers (triplet ages ranged between 2 and 38 years, mean age = 11.9, SD = 7.0). Since 2009, the combined survey 1 and 2 serves as the first survey for newly registered triplets at age 2. The combined survey comprises items on pregnancy, gestational age, smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy, mode of delivery, breastfeeding, attaining milestones, and growth. |

YC_BS2 took place three years after the baseline (YC_BS1) and targeted 12-year old twins (mean age = 12.2 years, SD = 0.3 years) born between 1995 and 1996 and their 9-18 year old siblings (mean age = 14.8 years, SD = 1.3 years) born between 1990 and 1997. The main aim of the Brain Scale project was to explore to what extent genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in brain development and cognition. Data collection included psychometric IQ tests, a comprehensive neuropsychological testing protocol, and parental and self-ratings of behavioral and emotional problems. Physical maturation was measured through assessment of Tanner stages. Hormonal levels (cortisol, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and estrogens) were assessed in urine and saliva. Brain scans were acquired using 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which provided volumetric measures and measures of cortical thickness.
