Substance use was assessed, including tabacco, alcohol, and (recreational) drugs.

For parents, substance use was also assessed during pregnacy. In NTR project YE_FITNESS, information about substance use was obtained via an interview.

Short description of the wave	After registration of newborn twins, which is before the age of 12 months for 89% of the twins (mean age = 0.8 years, SD = 1.17 years), the mother of a twin pair receives the first survey which focuses on conception (spontaneous or otherwise), information from parents themselves (demographics, height, weight), pregnancy (e.g. duration, smoking and drinking behaviors of both parents during pregnancy), birth and health (malformations) of the children shortly after birth. The mother is asked to fill in this survey, and this was done by the biological mother for almost all of surveys with others (stepmother, adoptive mother, some fathers) completing this survey in a small number of families (<0.05%).

Short description of the wave	The YS_2 survey gathers maternal report (fathers added in 2014) on motor development, breastfeeding, health, handedness and growth data (including height and weight) as obtained from the Dutch National Health Services (from 2010) in 2-year old twins (mean age = 2.35 years, SD = 0.30 years). From 2008 onwards, items on wellbeing, child care, and temperament were added to the surveys.

Short description of the wave	The YS_3 survey is sent to both parents around the 3rd birth year of the twins (mean age = 3.35 years, SD = 0.275 years). The survey includes the CBCL 1.5-5, items on zygosity, health, growth data as obtained from the Dutch National Health Services, child care, demographic characteristics, including religious background and parental education and occupation. From 2009 onwards, additional items on well-being, leisure activities, sport activities and life events of the parents are included.

Short description of the wave	The YS_5 survey is sent to the mothers around the 5th birth year of the twins (mean age = 5.52 years, SD = 0.55 years). The survey includes items on child care and school, growth, zygosity, toilet training, asthma and eczema, fine motor coordination, language development, and problem behaviors as assessed by a short version of the Devereux Child Behavior Checklist (DCB). The booklet includes an extra section for fathers of twins to report about behavior problems. From 2011 onward, items on child care and school, living and family situation were updated and items on wellbeing were added. From the second half of 2015 the short form of the Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ) was added. From 2017 the surveys no longer have a separate section for the father.

Short description of the wave	The YS_7 survey collects information on the twins at age 7 (mean age = 7.47 years, SD = 0.40 years) from both parents and targets the development of emotional and behavior problems, as assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist 6-18 (CBCL). From 2001 onwards, the Conners’ Parent Rating Scale - Revised (CPRS-R) was also included. In addition, these surveys included items on zygosity, medical conditions, vaccinations, tonsillectomy (from 2005), demographic characteristics, growth, sport and leisure activity of both children and parents, and additional items on wellbeing (from 2010). In 2017 the survey was considerably shortened (for example the Conners was removed).

Short description of the wave	The YNTR survey 12 was emailed to both parents of twins around the 12th birthday of the twins (mean age = 12.35 years, SD = 0.53 years). The survey targets the development of emotional and behavior problems as assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist 6-18 (CBCL). From 2001 onwards, the Conners’ Parent Rating Scale - Revised (CPRS-R) was also included. In addition, these surveys included items on zygosity, medical conditions, demographic characteristics, growth, sport and leisure activity of both children and parents (from 2003), and additional items on wellbeing (from 2008). In 2017 and 2018 the length of the questionnaire was shortened, the ASEBA Brief Problem Monitor (BPM) was used instead of the CBCL, and the 'cito survey' was added (see YS_CITO). From 2019, the questionnaire returned to its original length with CBCL and Conners items, and from 2020 the items on leisure time and on family and living situation were removed.

Short description of the wave	In this pilot project, the Dutch Health and Behavior Questionnaire (DHBQ) was developed at the department of Biological Psychology of the VU University. It is a collection of standardized questions targeting multiple domains. The focus of the survey is on emotional and behavioral problems assessed by the Youth Self-Report (YSR), subjective wellbeing, lifestyle, exercise behavior, sedentary behavior, and family functioning. The pilot was sent to 14-, 16-, and 18-year old twins (mean age = 16.6 years, SD = 0.60 years) born between 1993 and 1990 and their 12-25 year old siblings (mean age = 17.5 years, SD = 3.08 years) born between 1981 and 1991.

The YS_DHBQ16 project targeted 16-year old twins or triplets (mean age = 16.9 years, SD = 0.55 years) born between 1987 and 1999 and their 12-25 year old siblings (mean age = 18.5 years, SD = 3.34 years) born between 1981 and 2000.

Short description of the wave	The YC_BS2 project was the second measurement in the Dutch longitudinal Brain Scale study in which twins, their siblings and their parents were assessed at three year intervals. YC_BS2 took place three years after the baseline (YC_BS1) and targeted 12-year old twins (mean age = 12.2 years, SD = 0.3 years) born between 1995 and 1996 and their 9-18 year old siblings (mean age = 14.8 years, SD = 1.3 years) born between 1990 and 1997. The main aim of the Brain Scale project was to explore to what extent genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in brain development and cognition. Data collection included psychometric IQ tests, a comprehensive neuropsychological testing protocol, and parental and self-ratings of behavioral and emotional problems. Physical maturation was measured through assessment of Tanner stages. Hormonal levels (cortisol, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and estrogens) were assessed in urine and saliva. Brain scans were acquired using 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which provided volumetric measures and measures of cortical thickness. Buccal swabs were collected for DNA isolation for future candidate gene and genome-wide analysis studies.

YE_FITNSS Wave

Wave alternate title	Determinants of adolescent exercise behavior - the psychological response to exercise YE_FITNSS
Short description of the wave	The YE_FITNSS project aimed to investigate determinants of adolescent exercise behavior in a sample of healthy 16-18 year old twins born between 1993 and 1999 (mean age = 17.1 years, SD = .67 years) and their 12-25 year old siblings born between 1988 and 2000 (mean age = 17.2 years, SD = 3.24 years). Body composition was measured, as well as physical fitness (standing jump, hand grip, sit-and reach flexibility, balance tests). Impulsiveness of the subjects was assessed by the delay discounting questionnaire. Regular voluntary exercise behavior was measured by a short lifestyle interview. While being equipped with a VU University Ambulatory Monitoring System (VU-AMS) and Cosmed device, the subjects performed two submaximal exercise tests and one maximal exercise test. The VU-AMS device records electrocardiogram (ECG) data and impedance cardiogram (ICG) data. The Cosmed device measures oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2). VO2max (endurance capacity) was derived during the maximal exercise test. Before, during and after the exercise tests, subjects filled out the Activation-Deactivation Adjective Checklist (AD ACL), Feeling Scale (FS) and the Borg’s Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) at multiple time points. These questionnaires determined the subjects’ affective response to exercise. DNA was collected through buccal swabs to determine zygosity.

YE_COG18 Wave

Wave alternate title	Cognitive abilities of 18-year-old twins YE_COG18
Short description of the wave	The YE_COG18 project is the fifth measurement of a longitudinal study into the development of intelligence and problem behaviour (waves one and two not included in this catalogue, wave 3: YE_COG10, wave 4: YE_COG12), to which additional participants were recruited (twins with siblings and their parents). It targeted 18-year old twins (mean age = 18.1 years, SD = 0.5 years) born between 1986 and 1991, their 8-35 year old siblings (mean age = 18.8 years, SD = 4.9 years) born between 1970 and 1998, and their parents (mean age = 48.9 years, SD = 4.14 years) born between 1942 and 1965. The test protocol consisted of a physical part and a psychological part. Physical measurements included cardiovascular functioning (assessed with the VU-AMS device), a physical examination with basic anthropometric measurements and the collection of saliva, DNA and fingerprints. The psychological part consisted of a series of cognitive tests that measured the following abilities: intelligence (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, WISC-R or Revised Amsterdamse Kinder Intelligentie Test, RAKIT); inhibition (Stroop); spontaneous production of words (Verbal fluency); verbal learning and memory (California Verbal Learning Task, CVLT); emotion recognition (Reading the mind in the eyes); perceptual speed (Π inspection time task); spatial short term memory (n-back task and Corsi block tapping task). Furthermore, some questionnaires were administered to the participants (Autism-Spectrum Quotient, Tanner self-report), mothers of the twins (Social Responsiveness Scale) and research assistants (Test Observation form).

Short description of the wave	In 2008, a combination of the triplet surveys at age 1 and 2 was sent to mothers of all triplets in both YNTR and ANTR. The survey was sent to 535 mothers and was returned by 264 mothers (triplet ages ranged between 2 and 38 years, mean age = 11.9, SD = 7.0). Since 2009, the combined survey 1 and 2 serves as the first survey for newly registered triplets at age 2. The combined survey comprises items on pregnancy, gestational age, smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy, mode of delivery, breastfeeding, attaining milestones, and growth.

Body composition was measured, as well as physical fitness (standing jump, hand grip, sit-and reach flexibility, balance tests). Impulsiveness of the subjects was assessed by the delay discounting questionnaire. Regular voluntary exercise behavior was measured by a short lifestyle interview. While being equipped with a VU University Ambulatory Monitoring System (VU-AMS) and Cosmed device, the subjects performed two submaximal exercise tests and one maximal exercise test. The VU-AMS device records electrocardiogram (ECG) data and impedance cardiogram (ICG) data. The Cosmed device measures oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2). VO2max (endurance capacity) was derived during the maximal exercise test. Before, during and after the exercise tests, subjects filled out the Activation-Deactivation Adjective Checklist (AD ACL), Feeling Scale (FS) and the Borg’s Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) at multiple time points. These questionnaires determined the subjects’ affective response to exercise.
