Hair samples - Cortisol

A hair sample is a collection of hair strands, which are usually cut from a person's head. Hair samples usually contain hair that has grown over the last 12 months.

To collect hair samples to assess cortisol, a strain of hair at the at the base of the vertex posterior of the scalp was selected and cut right at the scalp. Hair was put into foil and stored at a dark, room-temperature location until sent to the Dresden Lab Service GmbH in Germany for analysis. The most proximal 2 cm of hair were sectioned and the hair was minced and cortisol was extracted. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) was used for cortisol quantification.
