Anthropometry

Anthropometric measurements include height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and body circumferences.

In NTR project YS2, growth data were obtained via the Youth Health Services for multiples and since 2010 also for siblings; paternal reports are available since 2014. In NTR project YS_10, anthropometry information was included since 2008. In NTR project YC_BS1, height and weight were also measured prior to MRI scanning. In NTR project YC_BS2, height and weight were also measured after MRI scanning and growth data was obtained via the Youth Health Services for multiples. In NTR project YC_DSC, birth height and weight were obtained during a telephone interview. In NTR project YE_FITNSS, anthropometrics were obtained at the beginning of the experimental protocol. In NTR projects YE_ATTEF2 and YE_ATTEF3, height and weight were measured at the end of the experimental protocol. In NTR project YC_ADHMRI, birth height and weight were obtained during a telephone interview and current height and weight prior to the MRI scanning. In NTR project YE_COG18, physical measurements including antropometric information were also obtained during the experimental protocol.

Short description of the wave	After registration of newborn twins, which is before the age of 12 months for 89% of the twins (mean age = 0.8 years, SD = 1.17 years), the mother of a twin pair receives the first survey which focuses on conception (spontaneous or otherwise), information from parents themselves (demographics, height, weight), pregnancy (e.g. duration, smoking and drinking behaviors of both parents during pregnancy), birth and health (malformations) of the children shortly after birth. The mother is asked to fill in this survey, and this was done by the biological mother for almost all of surveys with others (stepmother, adoptive mother, some fathers) completing this survey in a small number of families (<0.05%).

Short description of the wave	The YS_2 survey gathers maternal report (fathers added in 2014) on motor development, breastfeeding, health, handedness and growth data (including height and weight) as obtained from the Dutch National Health Services (from 2010) in 2-year old twins (mean age = 2.35 years, SD = 0.30 years). From 2008 onwards, items on wellbeing, child care, and temperament were added to the surveys.

Short description of the wave	The YS_3 survey is sent to both parents around the 3rd birth year of the twins (mean age = 3.35 years, SD = 0.275 years). The survey includes the CBCL 1.5-5, items on zygosity, health, growth data as obtained from the Dutch National Health Services, child care, demographic characteristics, including religious background and parental education and occupation. From 2009 onwards, additional items on well-being, leisure activities, sport activities and life events of the parents are included.

YS_5 Wave

Short description of the wave	The YS_5 survey is sent to the mothers around the 5th birth year of the twins (mean age = 5.52 years, SD = 0.55 years). The survey includes items on child care and school, growth, zygosity, toilet training, asthma and eczema, fine motor coordination, language development, and problem behaviors as assessed by a short version of the Devereux Child Behavior Checklist (DCB). The booklet includes an extra section for fathers of twins to report about behavior problems. From 2011 onward, items on child care and school, living and family situation were updated and items on wellbeing were added. From the second half of 2015 the short form of the Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ) was added. From 2017 the surveys no longer have a separate section for the father.

Short description of the wave	The YS_7 survey collects information on the twins at age 7 (mean age = 7.47 years, SD = 0.40 years) from both parents and targets the development of emotional and behavior problems, as assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist 6-18 (CBCL). From 2001 onwards, the Conners’ Parent Rating Scale - Revised (CPRS-R) was also included. In addition, these surveys included items on zygosity, medical conditions, vaccinations, tonsillectomy (from 2005), demographic characteristics, growth, sport and leisure activity of both children and parents, and additional items on wellbeing (from 2010). In 2017 the survey was considerably shortened (for example the Conners was removed).

Short description of the wave	The YNTR survey 12 was emailed to both parents of twins around the 12th birthday of the twins (mean age = 12.35 years, SD = 0.53 years). The survey targets the development of emotional and behavior problems as assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist 6-18 (CBCL). From 2001 onwards, the Conners’ Parent Rating Scale - Revised (CPRS-R) was also included. In addition, these surveys included items on zygosity, medical conditions, demographic characteristics, growth, sport and leisure activity of both children and parents (from 2003), and additional items on wellbeing (from 2008). In 2017 and 2018 the length of the questionnaire was shortened, the ASEBA Brief Problem Monitor (BPM) was used instead of the CBCL, and the 'cito survey' was added (see YS_CITO). From 2019, the questionnaire returned to its original length with CBCL and Conners items, and from 2020 the items on leisure time and on family and living situation were removed.

YS_DHBQP Wave

Wave alternate title	Dutch Health and Behavior Questionnaire - pilot YS_DHBQP
Short description of the wave	In this pilot project, the Dutch Health and Behavior Questionnaire (DHBQ) was developed at the department of Biological Psychology of the VU University. It is a collection of standardized questions targeting multiple domains. The focus of the survey is on emotional and behavioral problems assessed by the Youth Self-Report (YSR), subjective wellbeing, lifestyle, exercise behavior, sedentary behavior, and family functioning. The pilot was sent to 14-, 16-, and 18-year old twins (mean age = 16.6 years, SD = 0.60 years) born between 1993 and 1990 and their 12-25 year old siblings (mean age = 17.5 years, SD = 3.08 years) born between 1981 and 1991.

Short description of the wave	The YC_BS1 project was the first measurement in the Dutch longitudinal Brain Scale study in which twins, their siblings and their parents were assessed at three year intervals. YC_BS1 targeted 9-year old twins (mean age = 9.1 years, SD = 0.51 years) born between 1995 and 1996, and their 9-14 year old siblings (mean age = 11.9 years, SD = 1.16 years) born between 1990 and 1997. The main aim of the Brain Scale project was to explore to what extent genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in brain development and cognition. Data collection included psychometric IQ tests, a comprehensive neuropsychological testing protocol, and parental and self-ratings of behavioral and emotional problems. Physical maturation was measured through assessment of Tanner stages. Hormonal levels (cortisol, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and estrogens) were assessed in urine and saliva. Wave alternate title	DISC-IV DSM diagnosis of ADHD and multi-informant CBCL-AP syndrome scores YC_DSC
Short description of the wave	The purpose of the YC_DSC project was to investigate the relation between Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) diagnosis of ADHD and Child Behavioral Checklist Attention Problems (CBCL-AP) scores. Twins were selected based on their maternal CBCL-AP scores at ages 7, 10 and 12 (mean age = 11.7 years, SD = 0.78 years). Twin pairs were selected if at least one of the twins scored high on AP (affected pairs), or if both twins scored low on AP (control pairs). In families that agreed to participate, the mother of the twins was interviewed by telephone with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC-IV). Other surveys that were collected are the CBCL, SWAN and YSR. Mouth swabs were used to collect buccal cell samples, from which DNA was extracted.

YE_FITNSS Wave

Wave alternate title	Determinants of adolescent exercise behavior - the psychological response to exercise YE_FITNSS
Short description of the wave	The YE_FITNSS project aimed to investigate determinants of adolescent exercise behavior in a sample of healthy 16-18 year old twins born between 1993 and 1999 (mean age = 17.1 years, SD = .67 years) and their 12-25 year old siblings born between 1988 and 2000 (mean age = 17.2 years, SD = 3.24 years). Body composition was measured, as well as physical fitness (standing jump, hand grip, sit-and reach flexibility, balance tests). Impulsiveness of the subjects was assessed by the delay discounting questionnaire. Regular voluntary exercise behavior was measured by a short lifestyle interview. While being equipped with a VU University Ambulatory Monitoring System (VU-AMS) and Cosmed device, the subjects performed two submaximal exercise tests and one maximal exercise test. The VU-AMS device records electrocardiogram (ECG) data and impedance cardiogram (ICG) data. The Cosmed device measures oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2). VO2max (endurance capacity) was derived during the maximal exercise test. Before, during and after the exercise tests, subjects filled out the Activation-Deactivation Adjective Checklist (AD ACL), Feeling Scale (FS) and the Borg’s Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) at multiple time points. These questionnaires determined the subjects’ affective response to exercise. DNA was collected through buccal swabs to determine zygosity.

Short description of the wave	The YE_ATTEF2 project was the second measurement of a longitudinal study on the source of individual differences of cognition, attention, and executive functioning from preschool to young adulthood. This project included the measurement five years after baseline (YE_ATTEF1) among 12-year old twin pairs (mean age = 12.4 years, SD = 0.14 years) and their 8-16 year old siblings (mean age = 11.97 years, SD = 2.55 years), and additionally recruited new twin pairs and siblings of the twin pairs. Behavioral data were collected with surveys filled in by parents and teachers (Conners, Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD symptoms and Normal behavior Scale (SWAN), Teacher Report Form (TRF)) or filled in by children themselves (Youth Self Report (YSR)). To measure pubertal development, children filled in the Tanner questionnaire. Neurocognitive abilities were assessed with computerized ANT tasks, Flanker, Simon and Stroop. IQ was assessed with WISC-R. DNA was collected to determine zygosity and for genotyping SNP’S at candidate gene loci. Saliva was collected to assess cortisol concentrations.

Short description of the wave	The YE_ATTEF3 project was the third measurement of a longitudinal twin study on attention and cognition. This project included the measurement eleven years after baseline (YE_ATTEF1) and particularly focused on performance pressure. Twins that participated in the previous projects as preschoolers or preteens, were invited again, but additional twin pairs were recruited into the project (ages ranged between 15 and 23 years old, mean age = 18 years, SD = 1.48 years). Cognitive abilities were measured with computerized tests which took place at the VU: a working memory capacity task, a mental rotation task (MRT) and the Advanced Raven’s Progressive Matrices, which measures intelligence. During the Raven and MRT, participants were subjected to either high pressure or low pressure from the test assistants. During the assessment tasks heart rate, cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic control were measured using the Ambulatory Monitoring System (AMS) device. The tasks were followed by questionnaires about task perception and social comparison.

Short description of the wave	In the ADHD-MRI project, the genetic and environmental influence on ADHD related neurobiological changes were investigated in monozygotic twins (mean age = 14.9 years, SD = 1.2 years) who were born between 1986 and 1993. Twins were selected based on their Child Behavior Checklist Attention Problems (CBCL-AP) scores obtained in the regular YNTR survey waves and divided into three groups: discordant pairs (one affected, one unaffected), concordant pairs (both affected) and control pairs (both unaffected). To determine the presence of ADHD, mothers of the participants were interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC-IV). Additionally, they filled in two behavioral questionnaires (CBCL and Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behavior (SWAN)). The twins filled in the Youth Self Report (YSR). Based on the outcome of the interview and questionnaires, twin pairs that were found eligible for the MRI experiments were invited. YE_COG18 Wave

Short description of the wave	The YE_COG18 project is the fifth measurement of a longitudinal study into the development of intelligence and problem behaviour (waves one and two not included in this catalogue, wave 3: YE_COG10, wave 4: YE_COG12), to which additional participants were recruited (twins with siblings and their parents). It targeted 18-year old twins (mean age = 18.1 years, SD = 0.5 years) born between 1986 and 1991, their 8-35 year old siblings (mean age = 18.8 years, SD = 4.9 years) born between 1970 and 1998, and their parents (mean age = 48.9 years, SD = 4.14 years) born between 1942 and 1965. The test protocol consisted of a physical part and a psychological part. Physical measurements included cardiovascular functioning (assessed with the VU-AMS device), a physical examination with basic anthropometric measurements and the collection of saliva, DNA and fingerprints. The psychological part consisted of a series of cognitive tests that measured the following abilities: intelligence (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, WISC-R or Revised Amsterdamse Kinder Intelligentie Test, RAKIT); inhibition (Stroop); spontaneous production of words (Verbal fluency); verbal learning and memory (California Verbal Learning Task, CVLT); emotion recognition (Reading the mind in the eyes); perceptual speed (Π inspection time task); spatial short term memory (n-back task and Corsi block tapping task). Furthermore, some questionnaires were administered to the participants (Autism-Spectrum Quotient, Tanner self-report), mothers of the twins (Social Responsiveness Scale) and research assistants (Test Observation form).

YC_BS3 took place eight years after the baseline (YC_BS1) and targeted 17-year old twins (mean age = 16.85 years, SD = 0.36 years) born between 1995 and 1996 and their 17-22 old siblings (mean age = 19.26 years, SD = 1.30 years) born between 1990 and 1997..... The main aim of the Brain Scale project was to explore to what extent genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in brain development and cognition. Data collection included psychometric IQ tests, a comprehensive neuropsychological testing protocol, and parental and self-ratings of behavioral and emotional problems. Physical maturation was measured through assessment of Tanner stages. Hormonal levels were assessed in urine and saliva. Brain scans were acquired using 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which provided volumetric measures and measures of cortical thickness. Body composition was measured, as well as physical fitness (standing jump, hand grip, sit-and reach flexibility, balance tests). Impulsiveness of the subjects was assessed by the delay discounting questionnaire. Regular voluntary exercise behavior was measured by a short lifestyle interview. While being equipped with a VU University Ambulatory Monitoring System (VU-AMS) and Cosmed device, the subjects performed two submaximal exercise tests and one maximal exercise test. The VU-AMS device records electrocardiogram (ECG) data and impedance cardiogram (ICG) data. The Cosmed device measures oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2). VO2max (endurance capacity) was derived during the maximal exercise test. Before, during and after the exercise tests, subjects filled out the Activation-Deactivation Adjective Checklist (AD ACL), Feeling Scale (FS) and the Borg’s Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) at multiple time points. These questionnaires determined the subjects’ affective response to exercise. Twins that participated in the previous projects as preschoolers or preteens, were invited again, but additional twin pairs were recruited into the project (ages ranged between 15 and 23 years old, mean age = 18 years, SD = 1.48 years). Cognitive abilities were measured with computerized tests which took place at the VU: a working memory capacity task, a mental rotation task (MRT) and the Advanced Raven’s Progressive Matrices, which measures intelligence. During the Raven and MRT, participants were subjected to either high pressure or low pressure from the test assistants. During the assessment tasks heart rate, cardiac sympathetic and parasympathetic control were measured using the Ambulatory Monitoring System (AMS) device. Based on the outcome of the interview and questionnaires, twin pairs that were found eligible for the MRI experiments were invited. Both structural and functional MRI (color-stroop and flanker tasks) were performed.
