Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM)

Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) is a validated, non-verbal pictorial assessment of the valence (pleasure), arousal and dominance of a person's emotional reaction to a specific stimulus. After exposure to the stimulus in question, participants indicate how pleasant, stressful, and controllable they experienced the stimulus.

In TRAILS, the SAM was used to assess subjective stress-reactivity before and after the Spatial Orienting Task, Bangor Gambling Task, Trier Social Stress Test, and Startle Reflex Task.
