Donating Task - Money

The Donating Task aims to measure costly prosocial behavior by giving a child the option to donate money to charities or to keep it for themselves. Children are shown a short video from a charity organization on a computer, such as Unicef, SOS Kinderdorpen, or Liliane Fonds. The video features the life of a poor, malnourished child in a developing country, followed by some information on what the charity does to help children in that situation. After the video (50 seconds), children are asked whether they want to donate. The researcher is not present for this and counts the amount of donated money after the session.

The charity differed per L-CID wave. Unicef was used as charity in waves 5 and 6 of the Early Childhood Cohort and wave 1 and 4 of the Middle Childhood Cohort. SOS Kinderdorpen was used as charity in waves 2 and 5 of the Middle Childhood Cohort. The Liliane Fonds was used in wave 3 of the Middle Childhood Cohort.
