Psychological Acculturation Scale (PAS)
The Psychological Acculturation Scale (PAS) assesses individuals' psychological responses to differing cultural contexts. It is a self-report measure of feelings of belonging and emotional attachment to other people and cultures.
In RADAR, an adapted, Dutch version of the Psychological Acculturation Scale was used. The feelings of belonging and emotional attachment to Dutch and Moroccon people and cultures were measured through the Dutch Psychological Acculturation Scale (6 items) and the Moroccan Psychological Acculturation Scale (6 items).

Purpose | The goal of RADAR is to investigate the normal, but also problematic development of adolescents. During high school, adolescents experience a period of major changes, such as changes in classmates and friends. But it is also a period of bodily changes, changes in behavior and in becoming more independent. During adolescence, there is an increased risk of depression and anxiety. Sometimes, antisocial behavior increases as well. Adolescence is therefore a period in which some adolescents develop problems, but others don’t. In RADAR, we investigate which factors are associated with a healthy and a problematic development of adolescents. By providing reliable information about possible causes and risk factors for developing problem behavior, support programs and interventions can be modified to become more effective. |

Universe | The participants of RADAR were recruited from randomly selected schools in the center and west of the Netherlands and consist of three groups: RADAR Young, RADAR Old and RADAR G3 (the next generation). RADAR Young consists of 497 adolescents of Dutch descent who were 12 years old at the start of RADAR. RADAR also followed 190 Moroccan adolescents aged 12 to 17. This group no longer participates in RADAR. RADAR Old consists of 233 adolescents of Dutch descent, who were 15 years old at the start of RADAR. RADAR G3 consists of RADAR participants who will or have become parents of a child younger than 7 years old themselves. Parents of a step-, adopted or foster child are also invited to participate in RADAR G3. |

Description | The Research on Adolescent Development And Relationships-Young cohort (RADAR-Young) is an ongoing population-based prospective cohort study in which adolescents are followed from age 12/13 (W1) into adulthood (W12, age 30 in 2022). RADAR-Young focuses on the development of (1) adolescent relationships with parent and peer, (2) personality and identity, (3) psychopathology and delinquency, (4) substance use, and (5) academic achievement. RADAR-Young has a full family design: 497 adolescents, their parents, a sibling and a friend participate. Families are followed for six years. Each year, a full family assessment and three internet assessments (3 month interval) are conducted. All family members and the friend participate in the full family assessment. In the internet assessments, the adolescent, the mother, and friend fill out questionnaires during five consecutive days within one week. Outcome data are collected at each assessment. Additionally, reciprocal reports on family relationships (round robin design) are collected from all family members at each annual assessment. During internet assessments, data on relationship quality are collected each day. In addition, a subsample participated in a lab assessment, including (among other things) the Public Speaking Task and Facial Empathy Task. This assessment took place around the fifth annual wave. From wave 7 onwards, data were collected among target adolescents and their romantic partners biennially. |
Purpose | RADAR Young focuses on the development of (1) adolescent parent and peer relationships, (2) personality and identity, (3) psychopathology and delinquency, (4) substance use, and (5) academic achievement. |
