One Minute Reading Task

One subtest of the ‘one minute reading test’ was administered as a measure of technical reading performance, or oral reading fluency. It measures the accuracy and speed of decoding. Children were instructed to read out loud as many words as possible in 1 minute without making errors from a card containing 120 unrelated words.

Short description of the wave	The YS_7 survey collects information on the twins at age 7 (mean age = 7.47 years, SD = 0.40 years) from both parents and targets the development of emotional and behavior problems, as assessed by the Child Behavior Checklist 6-18 (CBCL). From 2001 onwards, the Conners’ Parent Rating Scale - Revised (CPRS-R) was also included. In addition, these surveys included items on zygosity, medical conditions, vaccinations, tonsillectomy (from 2005), demographic characteristics, growth, sport and leisure activity of both children and parents, and additional items on wellbeing (from 2010). In 2017 the survey was considerably shortened (for example the Conners was removed).

Short description of the wave	The YC_BS1 project was the first measurement in the Dutch longitudinal Brain Scale study in which twins, their siblings and their parents were assessed at three year intervals. YC_BS1 targeted 9-year old twins (mean age = 9.1 years, SD = 0.51 years) born between 1995 and 1996, and their 9-14 year old siblings (mean age = 11.9 years, SD = 1.16 years) born between 1990 and 1997. The main aim of the Brain Scale project was to explore to what extent genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in brain development and cognition. Data collection included psychometric IQ tests, a comprehensive neuropsychological testing protocol, and parental and self-ratings of behavioral and emotional problems. Physical maturation was measured through assessment of Tanner stages. Hormonal levels (cortisol, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and estrogens) were assessed in urine and saliva. Brain scans were acquired using 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which provided volumetric measures and measures of cortical thickness. Buccal swabs were collected for DNA isolation for future candidate gene and genome-wide analysis studies.

YC_BS1 targeted 9-year old twins (mean age = 9.1 years, SD = 0.51 years) born between 1995 and 1996, and their 9-14 year old siblings (mean age = 11.9 years, SD = 1.16 years) born between 1990 and 1997. The main aim of the Brain Scale project was to explore to what extent genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in brain development and cognition. Data collection included psychometric IQ tests, a comprehensive neuropsychological testing protocol, and parental and self-ratings of behavioral and emotional problems. Physical maturation was measured through assessment of Tanner stages. Hormonal levels (cortisol, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and estrogens) were assessed in urine and saliva. Brain scans were acquired using 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which provided volumetric measures and measures of cortical thickness. YC_BS2 took place three years after the baseline (YC_BS1) and targeted 12-year old twins (mean age = 12.2 years, SD = 0.3 years) born between 1995 and 1996 and their 9-18 year old siblings (mean age = 14.8 years, SD = 1.3 years) born between 1990 and 1997. The main aim of the Brain Scale project was to explore to what extent genetic and environmental factors explain individual differences in brain development and cognition. Data collection included psychometric IQ tests, a comprehensive neuropsychological testing protocol, and parental and self-ratings of behavioral and emotional problems. Physical maturation was measured through assessment of Tanner stages. Hormonal levels (cortisol, luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, and estrogens) were assessed in urine and saliva. Brain scans were acquired using 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which provided volumetric measures and measures of cortical thickness.
