Early Social Communication Scales (ESCS)

The Early Social Communication Scales (ESCS) is a validated observational assessment of social behavior and nonverbal communication skills in young children between 8 and 30 months of age. It includes measures of joint attention, behavioral requests, and social interaction.

In TRAILS Next, the ESCS consisted of 17 small tasks in which the experimeter interacted with the child in different ways (e.g., showing different objects, taking turns, reacting to an invitation, social imitation.). Taken together, the tasks took about 20-25 minutes.
