Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF)

The Brief Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) assesses parent-reported executive functions related to inhibition, shifting, emotional control, working memory and planning in children in everyday life. The BRIEF consists of 86 items that form eight subscales: Inhibit (10 items), Working memory (10 items), Shift (8 items), Emotional control (10 items), Initiate (8 items), Plan/organise (12 items), Organisation of materials (6 items), and Monitoring (8 items).

In Generation R, the Preschool version of the BRIEF (BRIEF-P) was administered at 4 years, which is a developmentally appropriate scale for that age group. The BRIEF-P consists of 63 items forming five subscales: Inhibit (16 items), Shift (10 items), Emotional Control (10 items), Working Memory (17 items), and Plan/Organise (10 items).
