Nijmeegse Ouderlijke Stress Index (NOSI)

The Nijmeegse Ouderlijke Index (NOSI, Parental Stress Index) is a parent self-report measure to assess parental stress. Includes items about parental acceptance and sense of competence.

In RADAR G3, the Acceptance (12 items) and Competence subscales (15 items) were used. Only the Competence subscale was assessed at 3 months (Wave 1). Both the Acceptance and Competence subscales were assessed at 2-2.5 ages and 4.5 ages (Wave 2 and 3).

Research on Adolescent Development and Relationships Cohort study

Purpose	The goal of RADAR is to investigate the normal, but also problematic development of adolescents. During high school, adolescents experience a period of major changes, such as changes in classmates and friends. But it is also a period of bodily changes, changes in behavior and in becoming more independent. During adolescence, there is an increased risk of depression and anxiety. Sometimes, antisocial behavior increases as well. Adolescence is therefore a period in which some adolescents develop problems, but others don’t. In RADAR, we investigate which factors are associated with a healthy and a problematic development of adolescents. By providing reliable information about possible causes and risk factors for developing problem behavior, support programs and interventions can be modified to become more effective.

Universe	The participants of RADAR were recruited from randomly selected schools in the center and west of the Netherlands and consist of three groups: RADAR Young, RADAR Old and RADAR G3 (the next generation). RADAR Young consists of 497 adolescents of Dutch descent who were 12 years old at the start of RADAR. RADAR also followed 190 Moroccan adolescents aged 12 to 17. This group no longer participates in RADAR. RADAR Old consists of 233 adolescents of Dutch descent, who were 15 years old at the start of RADAR. RADAR G3 consists of RADAR participants who will or have become parents of a child younger than 7 years old themselves. Parents of a step-, adopted or foster child are also invited to participate in RADAR G3.

Description	Since 2013, the target and sibling participants in RADAR-Young and RADAR-Old who will become a parent or who have children are invited to participate with one of their children in additional data collection centering around RADAR-G3: the next generation. Four waves of data collection are currently conducted: in infancy, toddlerhood, the preschool years, and middle childhood. Participants and their partner fill out questionnaires about their child’s temperament, developmental milestones, psychosocial adjustment, and child-rearing when their 3rd generation child is 3 months, 2 years, 4.5 years and 7 years old. In addition, a home visit is conducted when the child is 2.5 years old and 7.5 years old, during which parent-child interaction tasks, and child social competence and self-regulation tasks are administered. A school assessment takes place at age 5, when teachers are asked to fill out a questionnaire about the child’s psychosocial adjustment.
Purpose	RADAR - The Next Generation aims to model a) three-generational continuity and discontinuity in interpersonal relationships and behavior within families, b) continuity and discontinuity between G1-G2 parenting and G2-G3 parenting, and c) test for situational and individual moderators that make or break continuity between generations.

Short description of the wave	In wave 2 of the RADAR-G3 Cohort, the (now grown-up) RADAR targets and the target's siblings, and their partner filled out questionnaires about their child's (G3) temperament, developmental milestones, psychosocial adjustment, and child-rearing when that child was around 2 years old. These questionnaires were followed by a home visit at around 2.5 years old where the target/sibling and their child performed parent-child interaction tasks and the child performed social competence and self-regulation tasks.

These were followed by a questionnaire about the child's psychosocial adjustment administered to the child's teacher at around 5 years old.
